Up-Cycle Competition
Textile Design students have recently taken part in the annual The Great Big Up-cycled Competition held at the Congleton Town Hall. Students were asked to explore and create an up-cycled product out of waste materials. The students needed to consider design innovation, product usefulness, build quality and style.
Sophie Pritchard was placed as one of the overall winners, producing an innovative up-cycled skirt. Sophie was greatly inspired by the “Make do and Mend” initiative during World War 2. Using her dad’s old work suits and grandmother’s jumble sale finds, she deconstructed and patched a fit and flare skirt. Sophie added printed Congleton maps on the lining using traditional patch working techniques.
Year 9 Textile Design students also submitted exciting pieces of work – please click on the pictures below…
- Clarisse Stubbs, Bea Meade, Megan Bloor and Kiera Goodwin created a textured woven basket. Using a hula-hoop as a loom and kindly donated upcycle denim jeans from the staff at Eaton Bank Academy.
- Grace Devine, Megan Godfrey, Yasmin Mistry and Mackenzie Jackson. The students made a mosaic table using an old 1950’s chair. This was found on a local buy and sell website for free. Taking the top section off the chair and replacing with a dissected gym press which was then joined together using a biscuit cutter. They then upcycled old china and tiles to create a decorative top. Denim fringing was adding to the legs for extra detail
- Bryella Clutton, Charlotte Lindop, Lucy Radford and Eleanor Woods created a Lampshade using sections of an old gym bench press found in the PE department.
