Abbie Higginson (Yr 9) has won the title of ‘Reserve Senior Champion National Rare Breeds Survival Trust Young’ Shepherd of the Year. This event was held at the Royal County of Berkshire Show, where dozens of children competed for the awards. They had all qualified at the major Agricultural Shows in the year, held from as far away as Scotland- to Cornwall. Abbie won her heat at the Hope Agricultural Show in Derbyshire.
The competition final was judged by a well know sheep judge, who has been a great showman himself over the years. The competitors had to present their sheep expertly, and then had to answer various questions on the sheep they were showing, and numerous questions on animal husbandry.
Abbie has qualified for the final for the previous two years, and although placed in the final, had not been as successful as this year. She hopes to qualify next year, and to go one better and win the Championship! But before that she is looking forward to the lambing time at the Meadowland Flock of Jacob Sheep, which she looks after with her grand- parents and parents. This is when she hopes to spot next years’ winners!
