Eaton Bank Academy debating teams achieved a brilliant first and second place at the Regional Debate Competition held at Nottingham University.
Both teams started the competition winning their pre-prepared debate topic: ‘This house will televise criminal trials’. The teams then moved on to the impromptu topics which were ‘This house would ban private schools’ and ‘This house believes social media is beneficial’. The teams had just 20 minutes to prepare their 4 minute speeches on the topics. Both teams shone in this round and proved their ability to think on their feet and respond effectively to the other team’s arguments.
Congratulations to both of the teams:
Team 1: Helena Todd, Eloise Williams and Harrison Kasperowicz who achieved first place over all and went on to win the grand final.
Team 2: Josh Evett, Helen Banks and Pieter Swart who came second over all and Helen Banks was awarded a prize for best individual speaker.
Our new Year 7 debater, Jasmine Goodman also joined a mixed team and debated in her first competition.
The day was very enjoyable for all the students and the first place team will now take part in a residential in London where they will participate in debate workshops with experienced and successful debaters. This will lead to the national championships later in the year.
